harvey ball, an american commercial artist designed the smiley button as a free lance artist hired by the state mutual life assurance company of worcester, massachusetts to improve the employee morale.
he took 10 minutes to design it.
he never applied for a trademark or a copyright of the smiley and earned just $45 for his work, which has gone on to become a international icon.
